BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) has launched the Yuan Up — rebranded locally as the Atto 2 — in Europe, after giving the compact SUV (sport utility vehicle) its debut there last month.
Equipped with blade batteries, cutting-edge cabin technology and a wide range of features, the Yuan Up offers European consumers seeking comfort and agility a great alternative to smart urban electric vehicles (EVs), BYD said in an announcement today.
In Europe, the B-segment SUV market is critical, and the Yuan Up will appeal to a large potential customer base, said Stella Li, BYD’s executive vice president.
The model features BYD’s technologies in batteries and body structure and is compact enough to meet local demand for urban SUVs, she said.
BYD launched the Yuan Up in China on March 26, 2024, offering four variants with current starting prices of RMB 96,800 ($13,280), RMB 99,800, RMB 109,800, and RMB 119,800 respectively.
The compact SUV measures 4,310 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width and 1,675 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm. The Yuan Up sold in Europe has the same dimensions as the Chinese version.
Its front-mounted motor produces 130 kW of power and 290 Nm of torque, and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.
The model has a WLTP combined range of 312 km and a city range of 463 km, according to BYD.
To date, BYD has launched nine models in Europe, including eight battery electric vehicle (BEV) models — Atto 2, Sealion 7, Atto 3, Dolphin, Han, Seal, Seal U, Tang, and one plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) model, the Seal U DM-i.
In China, the Atto 3 is the Yuan Plus, the Seal U is the Song Plus EV, the Seal U DM-i is the Song Plus DM-i, and the Sealion 7 is the Sealion 07.
BYD said on January 15 that it was showing nine models, including the Yuan Up, at the Brussels auto show.
The Yuan Up’s European rivals include the Peugeot e-2008, Citroen e-C3, Opel Mokka-e, Fiat 600e, Kia Niro, and later this year Renault’s new R4, a Reuters report noted last month.
