    New spy photo and video show more details of Xpeng X9 MPV

    The Xpeng X9 will be launched at the end of the fourth quarter and will likely make a limited contribution to this year’s deliveries, the EV maker’s management said earlier this month.

    A spy photo and a video circulating on Chinese social media show more details of Xpeng’s (NYSE: XPEV) new X9 model, which is set to be launched in the fourth quarter.

    The front of the Xpeng X9 MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) carries over the current family design of Xpeng models, featuring run-through headlights, as shown in the spy photo and video widely circulated on Weibo today.

    What may be slightly surprising is that the model’s rear end offers a crossover feel, unlike current mainstream electric MPVs such as the Zeekr 009 and Denza D9.

    Xpeng’s management said in a conference call on May 24 after it announced its first-quarter earnings results that the company will launch a seven-seat all-electric MPV, internally codenamed X9, in the fourth quarter of this year.

    Xpeng was thinking about how young people relate to MPVs when defining the 7-seat MPV, and will detail the logic of how young people buy MPVs at the end of the year, the company said at the time.

    On May 26, He Xiaopeng, Xpeng’s chairman and CEO, said in a Weibo post that the company was making the X9 MPV, hoping to use the model to open up the MPV market for young people.

    The seven-seat MPV model will be launched at the end of the fourth quarter and may have a limited contribution to this year’s deliveries, Mr. He said on August 18 during an analyst call after Xpeng announced its second-quarter earnings.

    The model has a very spacious interior and will have a very good handling experience, Mr. He said at the time.

    Xpeng plans to launch 2 new models next year, and they will be the main drivers of delivery growth, Mr. He said on August 18.
