Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) is recalling thousands of vehicles in China due to a software issue that may cause the reverse camera image to be dysfunctional.

Tesla is recalling 1,071 imported Model S and Model X electric vehicles with production dates between January 27, 2023 and January 7, 2024, as well as 7,629 locally produced Model 3s with production dates between September 12, 2023 and January 12, 2024, with immediate effect, according to an announcement on the website of China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).

Some of the vehicles included in this recall have a software issue with unstable camera integrated circuit communication, which may prevent the reverse camera image from displaying, according to the announcement.

This can affect the driver’s field of vision when backing up, increasing the risk of a vehicle collision and posing a safety hazard, the announcement said.

Tesla will upgrade the software for free for the vehicles within the recall through an OTA (over-the-Air) upgrade to improve the stability of the rear camera integrated circuit communication and ensure that the reversing image is displayed properly.

Users can complete the software upgrade without visiting the store. For vehicles that cannot be recalled through OTA technology, Tesla will contact users through service centers to upgrade the software.

Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, both for deliveries to local customers and as an export hub. The Model S and Model X are not produced in China; they are sold here as imports.

The US EV maker sold 39,881 vehicles in China in January, and the Shanghai plant exported 31,566, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
